Atopic Dermatitis and Major Depressive Disorder: is there causality?

چکیده
Introduction The association between Atopic Dermatitis (AD) and Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) has long been reported by some population-based observational studies. However, studies are susceptible to potential confounders inverse causation, rendering it difficult conclude about the causality of such association. Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis is a novel epidemiological method assess causation an exposure outcome, with less susceptibility reverse using genetic variants as instrumental variables. Objectives To report clinical case depression in atopic dermatitis review what contributions MR have bringing matter AD MDD. Methods Case literature based on PubMed terms “atopic dermatitis”, “eczema”, “depression", “depressive”, “mood” “Mendelian randomization”, which were searched title abstract fields. Results Case-report: A 26-year-old man was admitted for inpatient treatment picture sadness, irritability, social isolation insomnia, 4 months evolution, aggravated suicidal ideation preceding days. On examination mental status, patient had frankly depressed mood, congruent affects. He contemplating suicide methods, pointing sodium nitrite intoxication option. related these symptoms worsening his dermatitis. In fact, he history other depressive episodes contemporaries periods dermatological worsening. Literature review: research identified 7 articles, assessed causal effect Three did support risk One study supported small MDD, significance disappearing when stricter threshold selection single-nucleotide polymorphisms applied. Conclusions included this poster favour absence suggesting that comorbidity observed clinically unlikely be causal. We must aware few not free limitations (e.g. subgroup age severity carried out, MDD diagnosis self-reported cases). Further may help clarify existence and/or uncover factors responsible Disclosure Interest None Declared

Sheehan’s Syndrome Presenting as Major Depressive Disorder
Sheehan’s syndrome or Simmond’s disease is a rare endocrine disorder seen in clinical practice. The clinical spectrum is diverse and a high index of suspicion together with a good clinical acumen and proper diagnostic approach helps in early diagnosis and prompt treatment of this endocrinopathy. Sheehan’s syndrome presenting as a major depressive disorder finds less mention in the literature.Th...
متن کاملIs there Progress? An Overview of Selecting Biomarker Candidates for Major Depressive Disorder
Major depressive disorder (MDD) contributes to a significant worldwide disease burden, expected to be second only to heart disease by 2050. However, accurate diagnosis has been a historical weakness in clinical psychiatry. As a result, there is a demand for diagnostic modalities with greater objectivity that could improve on current psychiatric practice that relies mainly on self-reporting of s...
متن کاملContinuation treatment of major depressive disorder: is there a case for duloxetine?
Duloxetine is a serotonin-noradrenaline reuptake inhibitor with established efficacy for the short-term treatment of major depressive disorder. Efficacy in continuation treatment (greater than six months of continuous treatment) has been established from both open and placebo-controlled relapse prevention and comparative studies. Seven published studies were available for review and showed that...

Copyright © 2008 Massachusetts Medical Society. Depression is related to the normal emotions of sadness and bereavement, but it does not remit when the external cause of these emotions dissipates, and it is disproportionate to their cause. Classic severe states of depression often have no external precipitating cause. It is difficult, however, to draw clear distinctions between depressions with...
متن کاملSubcortical volumes differentiate Major Depressive Disorder, Bipolar Disorder, and remitted Major Depressive Disorder.
Subcortical gray matter regions have been implicated in mood disorders, including Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) and Bipolar Disorder (BD). It is unclear, however, whether or how these regions differ among mood disorders and whether such abnormalities are state- or trait-like. In this study, we examined differences in subcortical gray matter volumes among euthymic BD, MDD, remitted MDD (RMD), ...
